Light Within
About the Series
Light Within is a contemporary exploration of feminine resilience, emotional transformation, and the quiet power that exists beneath the surface of everyday life. Through a visual language rooted in the traditions of Madhubani art and reimagined through a contemporary lens, Shachi Srivastava creates works that move beyond cultural narrative to explore universal human experience.
Each painting serves as both portrait and metaphor, inviting viewers to reflect on themes of vulnerability, renewal, hope, and self-discovery. Intricate patterns become meditative spaces, while symbolic elements—including lotus blossoms, birds, celestial forms, and flowing organic motifs—speak to cycles of growth, healing, and inner awakening.
Rather than depicting a specific individual, the women portrayed throughout the series embody shared emotional experiences. Their calm presence and luminous surroundings suggest that strength is not always expressed through action, but often through perseverance, compassion, and quiet endurance.
As the series continues to evolve, Light Within seeks to build a bridge between traditional Indian artistic heritage and contemporary visual expression, demonstrating how cultural forms can remain deeply rooted while speaking to audiences across cultures and generations.
The Story
The Light Within series began during a deeply personal period of transition. Around the same time, I participated in an exhibition organized by Raksha Inc. whose theme, Light Within, resonated deeply with me. The words stayed with me long after the exhibition ended, taking on new meaning as I navigated life after my daughter left for college.
As I adjusted to the unfamiliar emotions of an empty nest, I found myself reflecting on motherhood, identity, gratitude, and the quiet spaces that emerge when life enters a new chapter. Painting became a way to process those emotions and rediscover a sense of purpose.
Over time, I realized this journey extended far beyond my own experience. Every woman carries unseen emotions, responsibilities, hopes, and moments of transformation. We often move through life's challenges with remarkable grace, discovering strength not in dramatic moments, but in quiet acts of resilience, compassion, and perseverance.
What began as inspiration from a single exhibition theme gradually evolved into an ongoing body of work with its own voice and vision. Each painting represents a different chapter of becoming—embracing vulnerability, finding hope, rediscovering purpose, and allowing one's inner light to emerge with greater clarity.
Through vibrant color, symbolic imagery, and contemporary interpretations of Madhubani traditions, the Light Within series celebrates the quiet strength that exists within every woman. My hope is that these paintings invite viewers to pause, reflect, and recognize the light that already exists within themselves.
