Matritwa

An ongoing contemporary series exploring the timeless bond between mother and child through love, memory, and quiet resilience. Inspired by contemporary Madhubani expression, Matritwa celebrates the emotions that transcend words, faces, and generations.

About the series

Matritwa—meaning Motherhood in Sanskrit—is an ongoing contemporary series that explores the profound emotional and spiritual journey of motherhood. Inspired by my own experiences and expressed through a contemporary interpretation of Madhubani art, the series reflects the unseen strength, unconditional love, and enduring connection that continue to shape both mother and child throughout every stage of life.

A defining characteristic of the series is the intentional absence of facial features in many of the figures. To me, the deepest expressions of motherhood cannot be confined to a single face or emotion. They are experienced through presence, sacrifice, protection, and unconditional love. By leaving the faces undefined, the paintings become universal, inviting each viewer to see their own memories, relationships, and emotions reflected within the work.

The Story

Matritwa began in 2009, long before I considered myself an artist.

After becoming a mother in 2007, I found myself experiencing motherhood in ways I had never imagined. As I nurtured my daughter, I also began to understand my own mother with newfound gratitude and empathy. I realized that many of her quiet sacrifices, unconditional love, and unwavering support had only become visible once I experienced motherhood myself.

Painting became my way of expressing those emotions. There was never a plan to create a series—I simply kept returning to the theme because it remained deeply personal and endlessly meaningful. Over the years, Matritwa has grown alongside my artistic journey, evolving into one of the defining bodies of work in my practice and inspiring commissioned pieces that celebrate the unique stories of mothers and families.

Today, Matritwa continues to honor the invisible thread that connects mothers and children across time, distance, and generations, reminding us that the deepest expressions of love are often not seen—they are simply felt.

Some expressions are seen. A mother's love is simply felt.
